Once activated, your sump pump works by using its powerful motor to suck up all of the excess water in your basement or crawlspace through a pipe that leads outside of your home—usually into a nearby drain or street drain—where it can be safely disposed of without causing any further damage. After all the water has been vacuumed, the pump automatically shuts off so that it does not waste energy running unnecessarily. This cycle repeats as often as necessary until all excess water has been removed from your basement or crawlspace.
