Most homeowners never think about what's happening underneath their house. But that crawl space plays a huge role in your home's air quality, energy efficiency, and the long-term health of your structure. When moisture gets in and stays in, it creates the perfect conditions for mold, wood rot, and pest problems. That's exactly the kind of situation we were dealing with here in Creedmoor.

For this job, we went with a full encapsulation setup using an Insul-Barrier foundation blanket paired with a heavy-duty vapor barrier across the entire floor and up the walls. The liner is pinned tight and runs wall-to-wall with no gaps - that's intentional. Every seam matters. Ground moisture doesn't get a chance to evaporate up into the living space when the barrier is installed correctly.

We also hung an Aprilaire E70 dehumidifier from the floor joists above. This unit is built specifically for crawl space environments. It pulls moisture out of the air continuously and drains automatically, so there's no guesswork and no manual emptying. Once it's set, it just does its job. Pair that with a properly sealed space and you've got real, active moisture control working around the clock.

What this kind of setup actually does for a homeowner goes beyond just keeping the crawl space dry. Better moisture control down below means better air quality throughout the home, more consistent temperatures from floor to floor, and less stress on your HVAC system. It also protects your floor joists and subfloor from the kind of slow damage that builds up over years when moisture is left unchecked.

Crawl space encapsulation isn't a flashy upgrade. You're never going to see it from your living room. But it's one of the most practical investments you can make in a home - especially in a humid climate like central North Carolina.
