Most crawl spaces get ignored until something goes wrong. A musty smell starts creeping into the living area, floors feel soft, or an inspector flags fungus growth during a home sale. That's exactly where this Raleigh home was when we showed up. Before we could do anything else, we had to deal with what was already down there.

We started with fungus removal and a full cleanout. No shortcuts. You can't just lay a vapor barrier over a problem and call it a day - that just traps the issue underneath. Once the space was cleaned and treated, we got to work on the encapsulation itself, covering the ground and walls with a heavy-duty vapor barrier to block ground moisture from ever getting back in.

After the barrier was in place, we hung a dedicated crawl space dehumidifier from the joists to keep humidity levels controlled on an ongoing basis. This part matters a lot. A vapor barrier alone slows moisture intrusion, but pairing it with a dehumidifier means the air under the home stays dry regardless of what the weather is doing outside. For a Raleigh home, where summer humidity can be brutal, that combination is really the only way to do it right.

The end result is a clean, dry space that the homeowner doesn't have to worry about. No more fungus, no more damp air working its way up into the subfloor, and no more guessing what's going on under the house. Everything is accessible, protected, and set up to stay that way.
