Most homeowners never think about what's happening under their house. But the crawl space is one of the biggest sources of moisture problems, wood rot, and poor air quality in a home. Left unaddressed, that stuff works its way up - into your floors, your walls, and the air your family breathes every day.
On this job, we went in with a full system approach. We started with an insul-barrier foundation blanket along the walls, then laid down a heavy-duty 20 mil woven vapor barrier across the entire floor. The vapor barrier wraps up and over the foundation walls, creating a sealed barrier between the ground and the living space above. No gaps, no shortcuts.
The 20 mil thickness matters. Thinner poly sheeting tears, punctures, and degrades fast in a crawl space environment. A woven 20 mil barrier holds up to foot traffic, resists punctures, and actually lasts. It's one of those upgrades that makes a real difference over the long haul.
To finish the system off, we installed an Aprilaire E70 dehumidifier. Even with a solid vapor barrier in place, crawl spaces can still pull in humid air through vents and small gaps. The Aprilaire E70 handles that continuously, keeping moisture levels in check year-round without you having to think about it. It's a trusted unit built specifically for crawl space use.
When you combine crawl space encapsulation with a quality dehumidifier, you're not just solving a moisture problem - you're protecting the structural integrity of the home and improving the air quality inside it. That's the goal every time we do one of these jobs.
