Most homeowners never think about what's happening under their house. No visible problems, no obvious smell - so it stays off the radar. But crawl spaces in North Carolina deal with serious moisture pressure year-round, and left unchecked, that humidity works its way up into your living space. Musty odors, soft floors, high energy bills - it all starts down below.

Here's what we installed for this Holly Springs homeowner: a 20 mil vapor barrier covering the ground and wrapping the piers, an Insul-Barrier foundation blanket on the walls, an AprilAire E70 dehumidifier hung from the joists, and a new PVC crawl space door to seal the entry point. Each piece of this system works together. The vapor barrier blocks ground moisture from ever entering the space. The wall liner cuts down on vapor intrusion through the foundation. And the dehumidifier actively pulls moisture out of the air so humidity levels stay in check around the clock.

The PVC door is worth pointing out on its own. Old crawl space doors - usually rotted wood or thin metal - are one of the biggest weak spots on a home's exterior. They let in outside air, pests, and moisture with almost no resistance. A properly fitted, insulated PVC door is a simple upgrade that makes a real difference in how well the rest of the system performs.

The AprilAire E70 is a workhorse unit for spaces like this. It's designed specifically for crawl spaces - built to handle the tight quarters, the temperature swings, and the sustained moisture loads that come with being below grade in a humid climate. Suspending it from the joists keeps it off the vapor barrier and positions it to pull air efficiently through the space.

The vapor barrier wrapped around every pier, the liner sealed tight along the foundation walls, the dehumidifier humming away - this crawl space went from an ignored problem area to a fully protected, managed environment. That kind of setup protects the structure of the home, the air quality inside it, and the efficiency of the HVAC system above it.
